Students, Parents and Guardians,

 

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to 7th grade Life science! This year, students will participate in the State of Alabama’s AMSTI Life science curriculum.  This four part program will allow students to learn about all the different aspects of life science covered in the Alabama Course of Study for 7th grade science.  The five parts of the program are: Investigating Biodiversity and Interdependence, Studying the Development and Reproduction of Organisms, Genetics and Biotechnology, and Human Body Systems.  Students will be exposed to the scientific concepts and activities that will ensure success at the high school level and beyond. This class is designed for the student to enjoy and participate in, but it will be what you make of it. 

 

Supplies Needed

  1. Pencils, Mechanical or traditional (wooden) and pens
  2. 4 composition notebooks (like the ones you used in 6th grade—NOT spiral!)
  3. Kleenex
  4. Index cards
  5. Paper towels

 

 

Grading

Students will be graded daily on the material that that has been covered in the current unit. These grades are obtained as a result of group and individual participation. Students will also be graded on their analysis of our experiments. Students will also have quizzes, graded assessments and projects. 

 

**Grades will consist of


  1. Classwork and Homework
  2. Lesson quizzes
  3. Science Investigation and analysis 
  4. Unit assessments and projects

 


 

Overview of Grades

Science Investigation and Analysis - 30%

Classwork/homework - 25%

Quizzes- 15%

Unit Tests and Projects - 30%

 

 

Make Up Work

The student is responsible for all make up work.  Excused absences have 3 days to complete all make-up work.  Missing work will be given to the student upon their return. The student needs to ask Mrs. Cotton for their missing assignments.

 

Behavior

You will be expected to do the assigned work in this class and have a mature attitude toward the subject matter. I will expect you to act in a mature way and follow all school and classroom policies. Students will begin working the moment they walk into the classroom. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom without permission once they enter, so they need to get everything necessary for class before they enter the room. 

 

 

Procedures

  1. Beginning class- Be in your seat when the tardy bell rings.  If not seated you are considered tardy.
  2. Seating Arrangements- Students will sit in their assigned seats including when they are involved in group work. Seating arrangements will be changed periodically.
  3. Leaving Class- Students are not allowed to leave the classroom without permission once they enter the room. Students are to use the restroom and water fountain at specified breaks!!!!
  4. If there is a medical problem that causes you to need to leave the room often I will need a note from the doctor.
  5. Ending Class- Students are not to pack up materials unless their assignments have been totally completed or instructed to do so by the teacher. Students will remain in their seat until instructed to leave by the teacher. The bell is an alert for teachers, not for students. The bell does not dismiss you, I do. When the bell rings, stay seated for any further instructions and wait  until I dismiss you. 

 

Attention- Students are expected to maintain their attention to the speaker or audio-visual media during any presentation.

 

Science Classroom Rules

  1. Bring science notebook and a pencil and pen to class every day.
  2. Follow directions the first time given.
  3. Raise your hand to speak or to leave your seat.
  4. You are expected to be seated and working as soon as the bell rings.
  5. Study and complete your work (EFFORT = SUCCESS)
  6. Be polite, courteous, respect others and yourself.

 

 

Consequences (If you choose to break a rule)

 

1st offense: verbal warning

2nd offense: break detention

3rd offense: parent contact/ break detention

4th offense: parent contact and conference scheduled.

5th offense: office referral

Severe disruption: immediate office referral 

 

Rewards

  1. Praise
  2. Student of the week
  3. Positive Notes/ Calls home
  4. The joy of a positive learning experience 

 

 

Failure to follow School and classroom rules will result in consequences as outlined in the Pike County Student Code of Conduct.
